Platform: PC Windows XP/7/8 medium/high end PC recommended. Approx size: 15gb. Also available through Steam.
Overall: 5/5
Team Fortress 2 is a very good team based FPS with 9 very different classes, even if you find you don't like the gameplay there is socializing, trading and custom maps and more check out the official site for full details.

Introduction:

Team Fortress 2 is one of the most popular free to play games, and is currently in the top 3 games by number of players on Steam. Although fairly dated it has solid class based gameplay if you can find a server you can enjoy playing on (no easy task). The game features several gamemodes attack and defend, king of the hill, payload, control points among others. Trading either on servers or by steam trades is also very popular.

Initial Impressions:

The download for this game seems too large (around 15gb) surely some of the older maps which are hardly ever played could be excluded and downloaded on demand. Team Fortress 2 is only available on Steam. The main menu (see picture) is good (see illustration) and after some training you can play online, be warned that there seem to be a lot of players who are just out for themselves or not interested in playing in this team based game (even on your team) and it may take several attempts to find a decent server. Some servers are only for trading or socializing which makes finding a game difficult. Learning each class may take a few minutes and the training tutorial for them is recommended. With possible exception of the Pyro class, this game really is free to play and you will not be at a disadvantage with the default equipment, other games should take note.

General play:

The gamemodes are ok but very similar and there is an autoscramble if steamrolls occur, maps are generally nice looking but too narrow and spammy with the usual 24 player servers. There is also a co-op mode which is a recent addition. The game shows its age though still has a great style and animation and speech is very good giving personality to the characters which is added to in the "meet the" series of videos on the tf2 site. Extra weapons, and possibly hats drop at random intervals though you can only trade on a premium account (activated if you buy anything in the tf2 store). You can also craft things or get them from achievements.
